One disadvantage that is associated with this form of wagering is that most people around the world are not within close proximity to a live horseracing track and cannot use this method of wagering. The game of choice at the poker tables these days is no limit Texas holdem. Deciding which hands to put money into the pot before the flop is very important. I think everyone agrees that this is one of the most important decisions in being a winning player. You will waste too much money if you’re playing any two cards a lot.

Many books will give you a set of conditions for what hands to play. This is a good start but when followed to strictly, you will miss situations where you should to adjust from the basic play. It is the player who does this well that makes the extra cash at the tables.

So, what will tell you that you should adjust your starting hands? Things like stack size and how many players are at the table are important, but still can be pre-planned. It is the ability, and approach, of your opponents that make shifting your pre flop play worth doing.

Here’s a couple of examples of what I mean. Let’s say you follow the gap concept. The gap concept dictates you have at least the equal of the minimum starting hand requirements of the player betting before you.

Th conditions are as follows. You are playing $1/$2 no limit. The under the gun player bets $6. This player has shown many weak hands that he played like this, raising from early position. He is a wild , aggressive player. He has $30 after his bet. You are on the button and have a $40 stack.

Everyone folds to you on the button, where you sit with QJ of spades. This would be an obvious fold against a tight solid player. But, this could be a good chance against a wild player.

It is much less likely that he has a big hand, and if you hit the flop, there is a good chance to get paid well by this type of player. A tight solid player with AK won’t pay you on a Q74 flop. This guy easily could bluff, or chase for a hit if he has AK. You have position as well here, so these reasons make this a call instead of a fold.

Let’s set up another scenatio. This is also a $1/$2 no limit game. The first 4 players fold. The next player, with $40, bets $6. It then folds to you on the button. You have AA. You, the small blind, and the big blind, have about $100.

Normally with AA you should re-raise, to avoid a possible four way pot. But, you have noticed that the blinds both have been very tight, playing very few hands. I think this sets up a chance to hide the strength of your hand and make more money in a few different scenarios.

It is unlikely both the blinds will call, if they do, you need to be careful. I think it is worth this risk, considering the other possibilities. If you raise, and one of these tight players has a good pair, like 10 10 or JJ they will only call, or maybe even fold. If you just call, they should be inclined to re-raise. This can lead to the short stack going all in, followed by you at least calling, maybe raising, or even pushing all in right there. This makes for a much bigger pot.

When the blinds fold, you still have disguised you hand versus the short stacked raiser. He will tend to attack, even if he misses the flop. If you had re-raised, he might have folded his weaker raisng hands, like AJ. If he hits the flop you will be favored to stack him, unless he flops a set (1/8). I think these scenarios show why a call here is a good play even though it goes against the normal move.

How the players are playing at your table makes a difference. The good players pick up on these things, and adjust to take advantage. In the long run they make more money because of this.
