Shorthanded poker is a fascinating game. The major differences from full ring are that hand values change and their ranges are much wider than full ring. Some plays that were reckless at a full table can be profitable 6 handed.
Let’s take pocket pairs for example. Would you raise a pair of deuces UTG at a full ring table ? Probably not, but when you are playing 6 handed it is always profitable to play your hand like AK.
So what are the main differences between 6 max and full ring from a strategic standpoint?
* In 6 max you can play your pocket pairs like AK from any position. Even when your c bet doesn’t take down the pot your hand has more value than full ring.
* Hand values go up. This means your top pair medium kicker can be a very strong hand in some cases.
* Many pots will end up heads-up and you generally see more hands 6 handed. This allows the best players to press their edge more often.
* You can profitably squeeze from the blinds because late position openers have wider ranges. Aggression is the key to success in this game in most cases.
So you’re having a hard time finding out which game suits you best? Well read through the following questions and see how often you answered yes.
* Do you enjoy maximizing you long term win rate at the expense of variance ? By this we mean although you will win more money in the long term your swings will be much larger?
* Do you have a flamboyant aggressive style? Do you like getting paid off by marginal hands because of your image ? If so, 6 max games will be good to you.
* Are you a semi-pro looking to maximize your hourly earnings? Do you like to multi-table and increase your expected value by playing as many hands as possible ?
* Do you take the time to study your opponents and make your plays based on specific reads. 6 max will give the opportunity to develop great reads.
There is no one game that is superior to the other. It all comes down to personal taste and how one approaches the game.

Now I like form. I like to see lots of it - I hate to put money on a horse that has not got at least a few races under its belt, and this year’s St. Leger looks like a clash between some horses that haven’t seen a lot of action since June.
Frozen Fire and Look Here are the two favourites with the bookies. Frozen Fire was no great shakes in the English Derby, but won the Irish Derby in convincing style, but Irish Derby winners are often winners of the Irish Derby alone - I would not suggest Frozen Fire is worth the 2/1 odds being quoted.
Look Here has bags of talent, but has not run since conning the bookies at the Oaks when romping home at 33/1. That was back on the 6th of June and what has changed in the minds of the bookmakers? The odds of 4/1 are based on that one race at Epsom, and this horse has not raced since. The Oaks is a tough race, sure - but it was at the start of the season. Another popular filly is Unsung Heroine - but again, with only two races behind her, this is nothing to go on.
So I’m looking for something else. Doctor Fremantle and Conduit are two horses that have a few runs behind them. Conduit is a good 6/1 with most bookies, and Doctor Fremantle can be found at twice those odds - be sure that these odds will fall on the day. Doctor Fremantle’s form on softer ground makes those odds of 12/1 look great value.
It will be Sir Michael Stoute’s first ever St. Leger if either of these horses comes home and he has every chance. I’m not punting large because of the doubts over the other horses - remember you can have doubts either way: doubts that they will run well, and doubts that they won’t. But at 12/1, Doctor Fremantle is too good to say no to…
