How To Choose A Poker Table

So you finally got tired of scratching up your chips on the kitchen table. That hard surface is literally murdering your chips, and spoiling your great shuffle techniques. Now it is time to take your poker games to a brand new level and invest in a poker table. But now a number of questions arise; dimensions, material, and cost are but three. Let us dig deeper to find the answers.

When it comes to the dimensions of your poker table, your choices are round, octagon, and oval. I’ve never been much of a fan of round tables, so I’m going to skip straight to octagon. Octagon tables are great if you play a hodge podge of different poker variation and if you like to be closer to your fellow poker players so you can talk about general poker room BS. You can fit 8 players comfortably at an octagon-shaped table and everyone has their own little area to place their poker chips and their drink of choice.

The next type of poker table is slightly less popular. It’s the oval table A.K.A. the Texas Hold’em table. Texas Hold’em has exploded in the past 3 or 4 years and tends to be the home game of choice these days. These long oval tables can seat up to 10 people comfortably and are perfect for the flop-turn-river dealing style of Texas Hold’em…if you have someone dealing full time. If you’re passing a button then the flop-turn-river get dealt into whatever odd corner the dealer happens to be sitting in. This table is great for formal tournaments, but a bit of a pain for home games.

The type of wood you want your table made out of can be strongly influenced by your current decor and your budget. Generally you’re looking for a good hard wood. Soft woods like pine will chip and scratch easily whereas a hard wood like mahogany and ebony will generally withstand the antics of the average home game with little problem.

How much you pay for your poker table will be largely governed by quality and the type of wood it is made of. Prices range from $75, a build it yourself type to $7,500 and over for a custom made poker table. It is worth your while to do your research before buying.
