How To Choose A Poker Table

Published by Thom Riemersma under Poker

by Thom Riemersma

So you finally got tired of scratching up your chips on the kitchen table. That hard surface is literally murdering your chips, and spoiling your great shuffle techniques. Now it is time to take your poker games to a brand new level and invest in a poker table. But now a number of questions arise; dimensions, material, and cost are but three. Let us dig deeper to find the answers.

When it comes to the dimensions of your poker table, your choices are round, octagon, and oval. I’ve never been much of a fan of round tables, so I’m going to skip straight to octagon. Octagon tables are great if you play a hodge podge of different poker variation and if you like to be closer to your fellow poker players so you can talk about general poker room BS. You can fit 8 players comfortably at an octagon-shaped table and everyone has their own little area to place their poker chips and their drink of choice.

The next type of poker table is slightly less popular. It’s the oval table A.K.A. the Texas Hold’em table. Texas Hold’em has exploded in the past 3 or 4 years and tends to be the home game of choice these days. These long oval tables can seat up to 10 people comfortably and are perfect for the flop-turn-river dealing style of Texas Hold’em…if you have someone dealing full time. If you’re passing a button then the flop-turn-river get dealt into whatever odd corner the dealer happens to be sitting in. This table is great for formal tournaments, but a bit of a pain for home games.

The type of wood you want your table made out of can be strongly influenced by your current decor and your budget. Generally you’re looking for a good hard wood. Soft woods like pine will chip and scratch easily whereas a hard wood like mahogany and ebony will generally withstand the antics of the average home game with little problem.

How much you pay for your poker table will be largely governed by quality and the type of wood it is made of. Prices range from $75, a build it yourself type to $7,500 and over for a custom made poker table. It is worth your while to do your research before buying.

Good Times for Everyone - Visit Las vegas

Published by Mike Mulkern under Online Gambling

by Mike Mulkern

Las Vegas known at “The Entertainment Capital of the World” is located in southeastern Nevada, USA. With its notorious nightlife it is also known as “Sin City” due to its gambling and prostitution history. Today it is well know for its resorts, casinos, shopping and Broadway and Hollywood type shows.

With the unrestricted availability of alcoholic beverages, Las Vegas is the place to be for conventions and vacations alike. It’s is one of the world’s most recognizable cities and is featured often on television and in movies.

Bugsy Siegel’s Flamingo Hotel became the first hotel on the Las Vegas Strip in 1946. Nevada had already legalized gambling and this hotel was the first of many with their casinos to open. Las Vegas, which became a city in 1911, was beginning to grow.

Depending on your budget and where you prefer to stay while on a visit to Las Vegas there are numerous hotels and resorts to stay in. Whether you want to be near a casino or having a family vacation the choices are virtually endless. The hotels are always making changes in order to make your experience better. The areas surrounding Las Vegas are not as developed but your motel stay can be less expensive if you are willing to drive a little ways into the limelight areas.

Head back to the strip at night. It’s very cool in the desert at night and comfortable to walk around after dark. But with all the lights turned on it’s an amazing spectacle. Head out for a meal at a world famous restarant and take in a famous Las Vegas show. Try your luck in one of the many casinos.

When visiting Las Vegas you need to make sure that you take along some gambling money, it doesn’t have to be a lot, just enough to try your luck at the slots or maybe even a blackjack table. If you don’t know how to play then many of the casinos offer free lessons during the day for your pleasure. Don’t forget to plan on taking in a show or two as well. Las Vegas has some of the best shows to be enjoyed such as David Cassidy, Penn and Teller, Cirque Du Soliel or even a Vegas Showgirl extravaganza.

Las Vegas is a very interesting city even if you don’t gamble. Rent a car and visit the local Spring Mountains or take a drive to Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. There is something for everyone at Las Vegas. Put it on your vacation list.

Strategies for Winning at Poker

Published by Robert Eagle under Online Gambling

by Robert Eagle

The good poker player knows that being predictable is a death sentence. Using only one or two different plays leads to having tells. A tell lets all the other players know exactly what you are going to do and sometimes what you have in your hand.

Playing aggressively is known to be a key to success. However, playing aggressively every time also leads to opponents knowing that you are bluffing. An aggressive play is when a player bets and raises when they have a bad hand.

On the first two cards and the flop, the aggressive player bets forcefully. An aggressive player has to know that he can win because the hand can improve on the turn and the river cards. As advertisement for future hands, the aggressive player might be luring in the other players to think he plays bad hands all the time.

Besides this, bluffing has other characteristics too. Due to the fact that he is actually holding a losing hand, a person bluffs to get the other players to fold. This is often successful and is called a pure-bluff.

A semi-bluff is when a player bets aggressively upon only seeing the hole cards. This is called a semi-bluff because there is a chance that his hand might improve. In any case, if the semi-bluff works and the other players fold, or if they do not fold and the flop improve his hand, the player will win the pot.

A check-raise play is when a player checks, or doesn’t bet on a round, and hopes another player will bet on, or open, the round. Then the player will raise after the other player bets. This is a form of deception in that it makes the other players initially think the player has a poor hand but he is actually trying to get the other players to bet for a bigger pot.

The check-raise technique is a double-edged sword. A check-raise gives other players a chance to improve their hand, whereas they would have folded if the check-raiser had just bet at first. It also makes the other players aware that you have a strong hand but that could be an advantage in bluffing.

A form of bluffing that doesn’t advance the game past the ante stage is a steal. The player will raise the ante if there have already been players who have folded stealing the pot from the person who is next in line. It doesn’t win the player much money because it is done right at the ante, but it is a strategy that is usually reserved for a point in the game when the ante has become rather high.

Poker players do have a regularly used play called drawing. The player is trying to create a hand from the cards in the window in a drawing play. If the other players already have a good hand from the hole cards and the flop, this play usually won’t work.

When a player raises in order to make the other players fold leaving only one opponent left, he is using the isolation play. A player with few chips is the target of this play by a player with many chips. This is deliberate elimination and may, depending upon the luck of the draw, take a couple of hands.

When used together and consistently, but not in a predictable fashion, will help keep his opponents on their toes. Being eliminated early is a result of having tells or being predictable. Winning the final pot depends on hiding your tells from the other players.
