Okay, you’ve decided you’re going to play some online poker. There are a lot of options of what game to play. Let’s stick to Texas Holdem and look at the variety of choices you have.

The World Series of Poker Main Event is a typical multi table tournament (except it’s the biggest of them all). The goal is to get all the chips. Everyone pays an entry fee, $10,000 for the WSOP Main Event, starts with the same amount of chips, and begins at the appointed time. Then you do battle until one player has won all the chips.

Still a multi table event, there is also the re buy /add on format. Here, for a designated amount of time, usually one hour, you can buy more chips whenever your chip stack is at the original buy in amount, or less. After the first hour, you can add on by buying more chips. Then the rest of the tournament is like a normal multi table event.

I believe all poker rooms offer their players events called free rolls. These are nearly always multi table tournaments. They offer prizes, usually money. But, as the name implies, they are free!

Another very popular style is the satellite. In a satellite you are qualifying to play in a bigger tournament. Let’s say you want to play in the WSOP Main Event. You don’t have $10,000, but you are willing to risk $1,000, to try to win a seat. You can play in a $1,000 satellite to try. If forty people enter this event then exactly four seats to the Main Event will be awarded.

Sit and Go tournaments are very common now in online poker rooms. These are mainly single table tournaments, ranging from two to ten players. They do not have an official starting time, but instead begin when the right amount of players have entered.

A combination is the multi table sit and go. Here we have at least two tables and as many as twenty. But, the tournament doesn’t start until the designated amount of players have entered.

The most common form of poker is the cash game. There are three main cash game choices. No limit, pot limit and limit.

Heads up players are now offered heads up tournaments. Here, rounds of heads up matches are played with half the field being eliminated after each round. This continues until only one player is left.

There are other games offered other than Texas holdem. They include Omaha, seven card stud, and razz.

That’s a lot of options. Try to make sure you have a good idea of the differences in these various games. It will be very frustrating to lose because you played wrong for the game you chose.
